Ever wonder how bells are made? Can bells fall out of tune? What is a campanologist? Discover the answers to these questions and more as bellmaker Benjamin Sunderlin leads guests on a discussion of the fascinating history and future of bells.

 

Meet your bellmaker.

Benjamin Sunderlin was born in Indiana and developed as a fine artist throughout his early years, earning numerous national grants, awards, fellowships, and was even featured in an Oscar-nominated documentary. At the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, he discovered bronze foundry work.

Founder's Brunch

Join Paul Ashe, founding director of the National Bell Festival, for an intimate brunch at a private home in Washington. A menu of sumptuous flavors and extraordinary bites will delight your senses and fuel you for the day of BellFest activities ahead.

Whisky Tasting

Spirit lovers are invited to take a "Scottish tour in a glass" with a guided tasting of exceptional single malt and blended whiskies from Bonnie Scotland. Learn how whisk(e)y is made, the different types and regions that produce it, and the history of the barrel aging process that is behind everyone's favorite nutty, oaky, and smoky spirit!

Your BellFest experience will start with a wee dram of each of these fine Scotch whiskies, presented by the dapper and distinguished gentlemen of The Whiskey Library:

Exploring the many BellFest events and experiences around D.C. on New Year's Day might leave you chilly, but our neighborhood partners are here to help! Friendly businesses, hotels, and restaurants across town are opening their doors and providing complimentary coffee and cocoa to festival goers. Simply drop in, say hello, and warm up with a cup of joe!
